Ophir awards Fortuna survey contract to Fugro

MALABO, November 30, 2015 – London-headquartered energy company Ophir awarded the Dutch firm Fugro a survey services development contract on November 30 for its large-scale floating LNG installation and associated subsea structures in the Fortuna field in offshore Equatorial Guinea. Rebounding demand for LNG in early 2015 led to a rise in activity in the region, which had only one LNG train in 2009.

The field, located near Bioko island, is expected to produce 2.2 metric tonnes per year, with first gas expected in mid-2019. Ophir holds a 80-percent working interest in the field and has scheduled the final investment decision for the project as mid-2016.

The LNG offtake contracts for the project have already been signed for demand greater than the available volume, as the field will deliver to both Atlantic and Pacific basins. The field has an estimated 23 bcm (800 bcf) in gas reserves and was discovered in 2008.

The industry expects global demand for LNG to rise up to 6 percent per year through 2020 as the share of natural gas in the world’s energy mix also increases from 21 percent in 2010 to 25 percent in 2035.
