Petrobras, Ecopetrol confirm 170-bcm gas find off Colombia
BOGOTA, October 4, 2024 – Petrobras on Thursday announced that the estimated volume of its gas discoveries in Colombia’s Guajira Offshore Basin is around 170 bcm (6 tcf).
Petrobras operates the asset with a 44.4% interest, with Colombia NOC Ecopetrol holding the remaining 55.6%.
The news follows Petrobras’s announcement in August 2024, which stated the company had discovered gas in the Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 wells, previously named Uchuva-1 and Uchuva-2. The company stated that the commercial viability of the reserve will require further studies. It further noted that material facts will follow in due course.
The discovery has the potential to contribute to Colombia’s decreasing gas reserves, which are set to run out in six years at the current rate of demand.
