Poland's first LNG terminal

Poland opens first LNG terminal

Poland

GDANSK, October 12, 2015 – Poland marked the opening of its first LNG terminal on Monday, with hopes of alleviating its dependence on Russian gas.

Commercial deliveries of LNG are expected to begin in 2016. In mid-December, the terminal will receive its first import of the commodity from Qatar, which will be used to cool the facility.

The terminal, operated by the Polskie LNG Company, is located in the Baltic Sea port of Swinoujscie.

Supply agreements are in place for 30 percent of the facility’s capacity, but this is expected to increase if it can be put to use as a transit point for exports to neighbours such as the Czech Republic and Lithuania.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz pledged that Poland would become free from reliance upon Russian gas imports in 2016.
