Repsol enters biomethane segment with 40% stake in Spanish player

Spain
Spanish energy player Repsol announced on Wednesday it has acquired a 40% stake in local biogas, biomethane and hydrogen player Genia Bioenergy, marking its entry into the biomethane segment.

Genia Bioenergy has 19 biomethane plants under development with a total capacity of 1.5 TWh per year, set to generate renewable gas from agricultural and livestock waste in Spain and Portugal.

Repsol plans to use produced biomethane both internally and for sales.

The company says it is targeting a growing presence in the emerging renewable gas industry.

This agreement is an important step forward in our strategy to take advantage of substrates and organic waste, which would otherwise be waste, and transform them into fuels for the home, industry and mobility, Repsol’s executive managing director of industrial transformation and circular economy, Juan Abascal, said.

“Genia Bioenergy’s experience, talent and assets will allow us to position ourselves as the only integrated player in the entire biomethane value chain.”
