New bomb attack on Colombia pipeline

A week after a bombing of Colombia’s Transandino pipeline caused a massive oil spill, Farc rebels have attacked another section of the line.

The bombing in Putumayo province took place before dawn on Monday. Spillage from the pipeline was minimal as flows had been shut down following last week’s disaster.

Cleanup crews are at work containing last week’s spill of more than 10,000 barrels of oil into waterways in the province of Nariño, which has threatened to reach the Bay of Tumaco.

Colombia’s president, Juan Manuel Santos, said the spill could be the worst environmental disaster in the country’s history.

The bombings follow Farc’s May 22 announcement of an end to the unilateral ceasefire it had declared as part of peace talks with the government.

Operated by state-run Ecopetrol, the Transandino pipeline runs from Orito to Tumaco, with a 190,000-barrel-per-day capacity.
