Singapore begins first renewable power imports

Singapore
Singapore has begun imports of 100 MW of renewable energy from Lao People’s Democratic Republic under a two-year power purchase deal signed between Keppel Electricity and state-owned Électricité du Laos, Singapore’s Energy Market Authority announced on Thursday.

The Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project is the first cross-border electricity trade involving four ASEAN countries and the first import of renewable electricity into Singapore.

The venture is the first step towards the proposed ASEAN Power Grid project that will enable the trade of electricity between nations in the region.

Keppel Electric is the first entity to be issued an electricity import licence by the Energy Market Authority.

The deal is part of Singapore’s aim to import up to 4 GW of renewable energy by 2035.
