SMIT, Transocean assess salvage work

Transocean in a statement on Tuesday said that the company was in “the assessment phase” of ongoing salvage efforts to recover the rig, which was not carrying personnel. En route to Malta, severe weather conditions caused the 17,000-tonne platform’s tow line to snap, and the drilling unit was subsequently blown ashore at Dalmore, near Carloway.
While the Transocean Winner’s four diesel tanks contain 280 tonnes of fuel, pollution experts from the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency have said the stranded rig does not pose a threat to the environment. An investigation into the incident has been launched.
