South Dakota leak shuts down Keystone

AMHERST, November 17, 2017 – The Keystone pipeline has been shut down after about 5,000 barrels of crude spilled on Thursday, international media reported on Friday.

The leak, the largest to date originating from the pipe in South Dakota, took place near the town of Amherst and authorities are investigating, CNN added. No injuries have been reported in the incident, which came four days before Nebraska authorities are to decide on an extension of the project in their state, dubbed Keystone XL.

“We have been keeping our shippers and customers up to date and have communicated that the pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Cushing, Oklahoma and to Wood River/Patoka, Illinois is expected to remain shut down as we respond to this incident,” operator TransCanada said in a statement. “This does not affect the Marketlink pipeline system, which uses the facilities of the southern leg of the Keystone system from Cushing to the Gulf Coast.”
