Workers attempted to clean the spill, located offshore Balikpapan City, by burning it. Two people, thought to be fishermen, were killed when they were caught in it.
“The fire was quite big, about two kilometres high. It can be seen from Balikpapan City and the smell was all over the place,” Octavianto, a senior official of East Borneo’s search and rescue agency, told AFP.
The source of the oil spill is unknown.
