UK’s Balfour Beatty wins $1-billion Net Zero Teesside Power contract
UK TEESSIDE, June 26, 2025 – The UK’s Balfour Beatty has secured a USD 1.05-billion contract from Technip Energies to build Net Zero Teesside Power, set to be the world’s first gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage, the company said on Thursday.
The project will be delivered in partnership with GE Vernova and supported by Shell Catalysts & Technologies, targeting up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 captured annually for storage under the North Sea by the Northern Endurance Partnership, a joint venture of BP, Equinor and TotalEnergies.
Once completed, the station will generate up to 742 MW of low-carbon electricity, enough for more than 1 million UK homes. Construction will begin later this year and is expected to conclude in 2028, with around 1,500 people employed at peak.
“Net Zero Teesside Power is an ambitious scheme, forging the path towards the sustainable infrastructure of the future and positioning the UK as a leader in cleaner, greener energy consumption,” Balfour Beatty group chief executive Leo Quinn said.
Balfour Beatty is an international infrastructure group operating across transportation, power and utility systems, and social and commercial infrastructure. It provides engineering, construction and maintenance services and is known for its major civil engineering and power transmission projects across the UK, US and Asia-Pacific.
