Volt Lithium produces battery-grade lithium carbonate from oilfield brine
WEST TEXAS, October 24, 2024 – Canada’s Volt Lithium has successfully launched production of 99.5% battery-grade lithium carbonate from oilfield brine in Texas, the company announced on Wednesday.
The company saw its first output in the Permian Basin early this month, and unveiled the 99.5% milestone this week.
“Volt Lithium is on track to become one of North America’s first commercial producers of lithium from oilfield brine,” company president and CEO Alex Wylie said.
Volt has developed a proprietary DLE technology with the intent of commercially extracting lithium from oilfield brines across North America.
Its process involves a first stage for removing contaminants from the brine before extraction. Specialised ion exchange beads were developed by the company for a second stage of production.
The Calgary-headquartered company has successfully been producing lithium chloride concentrate, a precursor to lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide monohydrate and lithium metal from oilfield brine produced from the Permian Basin since mid-September.
The company said its samples of lithium carbonate have been verified via third-party testing for review by potential offtake partners.
