Wood lands EPC contract at Iraq’s giant West Qurna 1 oilfield
BASRA, November 19, 2025 – UK-based engineering group Wood has secured a new contract to deliver project management and engineering services for PetroChina at the West Qurna 1 oilfield in southern Iraq, the UK company announced on Wednesday.
The contract includes managing engineering, procurement and construction projects at the giant oilfield, which holds more than 20 billion barrels of recoverable reserves.
The West Qurna 1 oilfield, located approximately 50 kilometres north-west of Basra, is one of Iraq’s largest onshore hydrocarbons assets. Current production is around 550,000 barrels per day, with operator PetroChina targeting a ramp-up to 800,000 barrels per day by 2028 and 1.2 million barrels per day by 2035. The project is operated by PetroChina (32.7%) in partnership with Basra Oil Company (22.7%), Pertamina (20%), Itochu (19.6%) and the Iraqi Oil Exploration Company (5%). The field contributes around 10% of Iraq’s daily oil output and is a strategic pillar of the country’s energy infrastructure.
The project will be supported by nearly 200 Wood employees based in Iraq and the UAE.
