Qatar’s QP joins Shell in Namibia deepwater

WINDHOEK, April 6, 2021 – Shell Namibia Upstream has brought Qatar Petroleum on board in two deepwater exploration blocks off Namibia, QP announced on Tuesday.

Shell operates the PEL 39 exploration licence, covering Block 2913A and Block 2914B, with a 45% stake. The Qatari NOC will take a 45% participating interest previously held by Kosmos Energy. The remaining 10% is held by the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR).

The ultra-deepwater blocks are located in depths of about 2,500 metres and cover an area of around 12,300 square kilometres.​

The acquisition is QP’s second exploration licence in Namibia. In August 2019, the company took participating interests in offshore blocks 2913B and 2912.

“With this second exploration and production sharing agreement in Namibia, we are pleased to expand our exploration footprint in the country and to further strengthen our presence in the southern Africa region,” QP CEO Saad Sherida Al Kaabi said.

Shell has already undertaken seismic acquisition at the licence, completing three surveys between 2014 and 2019.

In 2020, the company acquired a package of frontier exploration assets from Kosmos that included its 45% interest in PEL 39.
