ADNOC oilfield achieves industry-leading carbon intensity

ABU DHABI, January 23, 2025 – ADNOC has achieved an industry-leading carbon intensity of 0.1 kilograms of CO2e per boe in its production from an Abu Dhabi oilfield, the company announced on Thursday.

The company said the achievement “set a benchmark among global oilfields.”

ADNOC engaged in optimised field development, deployment of digitalisation, AI and advanced technologies to maximise efficiencies and minimise emissions at the 70,000-bopd Shah oilfield.

The Shah field, located 230 kilometres south of Abu Dhabi, also benefits from ADNOC’s electrification of its onshore assets, which are powered with nuclear and solar energy.

The project is also home to the Shah gas development, which produces sour gas from reservoirs lying beneath the oilfield.

ADNOC’s overall upstream carbon intensity dropped to around 7 kilograms of CO2e per boe in 2023, positioning the company among the world’s lowest-carbon-intensity oil and gas producers.

“By leveraging advanced solutions including AI, digitalisation, remote operations and predictive data analytics, we are optimizing operational performance while significantly reducing emissions, reinforcing our position as provider of some of the world’s least carbon-intensive oil and gas,” ADNOC Upstream CEO Musabbeh Al Kaabi said.

“We will continue to innovate to decarbonise our operations and future-proof our business while ensuring a reliable energy supply to meet global demand.”
