Shell restarts production at North Sea field

ABERDEEN, February 4, 2025 – Shell has launched operations at a new FPSO in the UK North Sea, restoring production from the Penguins field, the company announced on Tuesday.
The Penguins field has a projected peak production of 45,000 boepd and has estimated discovered recoverable resources of around 100 million boe. Its output is primarily oil, with significant volumes of gas.
The project is operated by Shell (50%), working alongside partner NEO Energy (50%).
Production at the field previously took place via the Brent Charlie platform, which has been under decommissioning since 2021.
The Penguins FPSO’s emissions will be around 30% lower than those of the platform.
Oil from the project will be transported by tanker to refineries outside of the UK, with some of the refined products being imported.
Produced gas will be transported via an existing pipeline to Scotland’s St Fergus gas terminal, which supplies the UK’s national gas network.
