ACWA Power and SEFE partner on green hydrogen
RIYADH, February 4, 2025 – Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has signed an MoU with German energy company SEFE Securing Energy for Europe for the production of green hydrogen and its supply to Europe, the companies announced on Monday.
ACWA Power and SEFE aim to build a “hydrogen bridge” between Saudi Arabia and Germany, with an initial target of delivering 200,000 tonnes per year (tpy) of green hydrogen by 2030. Under the arrangement, ACWA Power will act as lead developer, investor and operator, while SEFE will serve as co-investor and primary offtaker.
ACWA Power’s growing hydrogen portfolio includes the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia, which will be capable of producing up to 1.2 million tpy of green ammonia, a project in Uzbekistan which will produce 3,000 tpy of hydrogen in a first phase and MoUs with Tunisia and Egypt to export green hydrogen via the SoutH2 Corridor.
SEFE is developing hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure in Germany by converting part of its 4,100-kilometre pipeline network to carry hydrogen. The company aims to leverage its position as one of Europe’s largest energy traders to market green hydrogen to German and European customers.
“This MoU with SEFE marks a significant milestone in accelerating the green hydrogen economy in Europe. We are forming a strong partnership to deliver substantial quantities of green hydrogen to Germany and beyond, making a meaningful contribution to global decarbonisation efforts,” said Marco Aracelli, CEO of ACWA Power.
