TE H2, VERBUND partner on green hydrogen project in Tunisia
Tunisia TUNIS, May 28, 2024 – TotalEnergies-EREN Groupe joint venture TE H2 has partnered with Austrian electricity player VERBUND on a green hydrogen project in Tunisia, targeting up to 1 million tonnes per year, TotalEnergies announced on Tuesday.
The H2 Notos will target an initial 200,000 tonnes per year of hydrogen destined for export to Central Europe through pipelines.
Electricity for the project will be supplied by large onshore wind and solar projects, while the water supply will be done via desalination of sea water, TotalEnergies said.
Hydrogen will be transported to the European market through the SoutH2 Corridor, a hydrogen pipeline project connecting North Africa to Italy, Austria and Germany, which is set to come on line by around 2030.
“This agreement with TE H2 and VERBUND marks a significant step forward in our quest for clean, sustainable energy,” Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy Fatma Thabet Chiboub said.
“Tunisia, firmly committed to its energy transition, sees in this project a strategic pivot to strengthen its attractiveness as a destination of choice for foreign investment in renewable energies.”
