ACWA Power signs MoUs for hydrogen, ammonia infrastructure
RIYADH, January 28, 2025 – Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has signed an MoU with Italian gas transportation and storage company Snam to develop green hydrogen and ammonia supply chain infrastructure linking Saudi Arabia and Europe, the companies announced on Monday.
The agreement foresees ACWA Power, which develops and operates green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities in Saudi Arabia, exploring collaborations and joint investments with Snam to bring green hydrogen and ammonia to Europe.
In addition, the companies will explore the development of an ammonia import terminal in Italy to facilitate the supply of green hydrogen through SoutH2, a 3,300-kilometre pipeline connecting North Africa to Italy, Austria and Germany, which is scheduled for completion in 2030.
The SoutH2 project is being led by Snam together with TAG and GCA from Austria and bayernets from Germany as transmission system operators.
“We are excited to join forces with Snam to drive advancements in green hydrogen. With power sector emissions already down 40% compared to 20 years ago, we need to focus our collective efforts on new, low-carbon molecules to decarbonise,” said Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power.
