OMV breaks ground on €750-million sustainable fuels unit in Romania

BUCHAREST, February 20, 2025 – OMV Petrom has started construction on a sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel (HVO) production unit at Romania’s Petrobrazi refinery, the company announced on Wednesday.
The facility is expected to begin operations in 2028, with an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes.
The investment of EUR 750 million includes the SAF/HVO production unit and two green hydrogen production facilities. The unit will process renewable raw materials, such as used vegetable oils and animal fats, using green hydrogen to lower CO2 emissions by at least 65% compared to conventional fuels.
The project will be integrated into the Petrobrazi refinery, supporting Romania’s shift towards sustainable energy solutions. OMV Petrom is also expanding its EV charging network, with plans to reach over 5,000 charging points in Romania by 2030.
“Investing in sustainable fuel production is part of our Strategy 2030 and reflects OMV Petrom’s commitment to energy transition and reducing carbon emissions,” OMV Petrom CEO Christina Verchere said.
“Sustainable fuels are essential to decarbonize transportation, especially in sectors where electrification is difficult to implement, such as aviation. Between 2022 and 2030, we are allocating 35% of our investment budget towards projects that support the energy transition, in Romania and the region.”
OMV Petrom is Southeastern Europe’s largest energy company, engaged in oil and gas exploration, refining, and fuel distribution. A subsidiary of the Vienna-headquartered OMV Group, it operates Romania’s Petrobrazi refinery and invests in sustainable energy, including renewable fuels and EV infrastructure, supporting the region’s transition to cleaner energy solutions.
