Accelerate decarbonisation through innovation: Christopher Hudson

September 26, 2023

Christopher Hudson, president of dmg events, the organisers of ADIPEC, details how the international energy conference and exhibition is advancing innovation in support of decarbonisation.

By 2030, the world will be home to half a billion more people, demanding more energy every year. At the same time, the global challenge of climate change calls for urgent, game-changing solutions and partnerships to eliminate emissions.

Every government, industry, business and individual has a role to play in decarbonising quicker and creating the future of energy faster while safeguarding energy security and ensuring nobody is left behind as we create lower-carbon pathways to a sustainable, higher growth future.

It is against this backdrop that we are hosting ADIPEC 2023 under the theme of “Decarbonising. Faster. Together.”, with a renewed and strengthened purpose of gathering industry decision-makers, innovators and financiers to accelerate decarbonisation through innovation and collaboration.

Critical to accelerating innovation in decarbonisation is technology. New and improved technologies will enable industries and companies to reduce emissions, improve efficiencies, reduce environmental impact and enhance production, collectively allowing us to stay within the 1.5⁰ Celsius warming threshold set by the United Nations.

Through discussions we have identified specific challenges the energy industry needs to advance in through our 10 conferences, which include reducing methane emissions, supporting the decarbonisation of heavy industries, facilitating finance and investment in low-carbon energy and clean technology, and generally scaling up decarbonisation efforts. All of which we tackle in our conference programme.

Within our timely conference schedule, where 1,600 speakers will contribute their diverse perspectives across sessions, decarbonisation as a key driver of energy progress is the focus of more than 200 of our 350 sessions. Low-carbon solutions and technologies are included in the agendas of our Decarbonisation, Hydrogen, Strategic and Technical Conferences. Within the Strategic Conference, two conference themes – “Global Decarbonisation and the Energy Transition: The Role of the Energy Industry in the Climate Roadmap” and “Creating Cross-Sector Industry Participation and Collaboration: Developing a Zero-Carbon Value Chain” – will examine how ingenuity, engineering and technological solutions can help achieve net zero by 2050.

The relevance to and alignment of ADIPEC’s conference offerings with the energy sector’s need to drive sustainable progress while rolling back emissions is evidenced by the fact that we had our highest-ever number of submissions for our Technical and Downstream Technical Conferences. This increase reinforces the keenness of the industry to engage and be part of the journey to decarbonisation, developing the tangible solutions needed for a sustainable future.

On the exhibition side, we are proudly offering a new specialised area called the “Decarbonisation Accelerator.” The Decarbonisation Accelerator will enable organisations to showcase their game-changing projects and solutions driving decarbonisation at scale, to spark disruptive thinking and encourage industry adoption of decarbonisation strategies across the energy ecosystem. A dedicated Start-Up Hub within the Decarbonisation Accelerator will act as a catalyst for start-ups to present their groundbreaking technologies driving the future of decarbonisation and accelerating energy progress.

In a complementary way, our new “Decarbonisation Connect” initiative will serve to showcase the decarbonisation strategies and innovations of our exhibitors through dedicated spaces and presentations at their ADIPEC stands. The initiative seeks to support the global energy transition by inspiring innovation, increasing use cases and facilitating further adoption of decarbonisation solutions and services. A Decarbonisation Guide on the ADIPEC website will feature exhibitors’ decarbonisation products and solutions as well as the presentations being held at their stands during the event, amplifying visibility and engagement among ADIPEC visitors and exhibitors.

Recognising the transformational impact of digitalisation on the energy, manufacturing, logistics, transportation and shipping industries, we are also organising the Digitalisation in Energy Zone exhibition area, which will showcase the cutting-edge digital technologies that are reshaping operations and driving transformative change in areas like artificial intelligence, automation, big data/analytics, remote monitoring, machine learning, robotics and drones.

ADIPEC is also advancing decarbonisation efforts through the ADIPEC Awards, which, in its 13th year, continues to recognise the pioneers in innovation and collaboration advancing energy progress. Under the theme “Leading the Transformation,” eight new categories have been specially curated to address energy industry challenges and support the global energy transition. The categories reflect the need for universal access to cleaner, more secure energy; tangible and credible solutions to impact change; and transformational progress for the advancement of humanity.

By platforming the collaborative and innovative technologies that will be integral to a secure, lower-carbon future, ADIPEC 2023 is contributing to the advancement of decarbonisation in support of the global energy transition for a brighter and more sustainable future for all.

ADIPEC takes place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on 2nd-5th October. Across 350 sessions, ADIPEC will welcome more than 1,600 speakers and feature over 2,200 companies with the goal of encouraging collaboration and the action required to advance the world’s decarbonisation goals.
