Michel Hamon, managing director of Doris Engenharia Angola Lda (DORIS Angola), talks to The Energy Year about the importance of 3D scanning and modelling operations for maintenance programmes and the importance of maintenance and life-extension activities for the Angolan upstream industry. DORIS Angola provides engineering and technical assistance services for onshore and offshore oil and gas projects in Angola.

How important are 3D scanning and modelling operations for maintenance programmes?
Maintenance programmes require strong engineering support. A first step consists in getting a clear picture of the existing facilities. In that respect, 3D modelling and laser scanning are very interesting technologies that can prove to be of significant value for operators, saving time and costs. DORIS Angola has been continuously developing local experience and capabilities in surveying, 3D modelling and laser scanning to provide our clients with fully integrated solutions.
This development was achieved through recruitment and specific training programmes. Today, DORIS has successfully conducted these surveys, 3D modelling and laser scanning activities for several operators in Angola, and we expect this activity to grow in the coming years, including in the downstream sector.

How important are maintenance and life-extension activities for the Angolan upstream industry?
With the extension of the block licences, many development projects involve upgrades to the existing facilities to extend their life and also greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction. For the last few years, DORIS has been developing capabilities and expertise in platform life extension and the reduction of GHG emissions to support and bring added value to oil and gas companies.

What are your mid- to long-term strategic priorities?
All DORIS Group resources worldwide are fully involved to continue supporting Angolan development projects through engineering and technical assistance. DORIS created DORIS Angola in 2007 with the objective of being close to Angolan clients and developing in-country capabilities in the long term. With the support of other affiliates of DORIS Group, we have been constantly enhancing our existing technical capabilities and developing new ones, thus growing our in-country activity year after year.
Our engineering team has more than doubled since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, with an Angolanisation rate above 85%. This reflects both the increase of activity in the oil and gas sector and our commitment to long-term in-country development. Our expertise in platform life extension, GHG emission reduction, 3D modelling and digitalisation contribute to this development plan. Reinforcing our technical assistance, including with nationals, is also part of our strategy.
