Mozambique enters the global LNG arena

Julien Larour, managing director of Technip Energies in Mozambique, talks to The Energy Year about leading a successful EPC consortium for the delivery of the Coral Sul FLNG Project and upcoming opportunities in Mozambique’s LNG segment. Technip Energies is an engineering and technology company specialising in LNG, hydrogen, carbon dioxide management, ethylene and sustainable chemistry.

What has been Technip Energies’ involvement in the Coral Sul FLNG Project?
Being the first LNG project in the country, Coral Sul FLNG has helped Mozambique enter the global LNG market and monetise Africa’s largest gasfield. We are proud to have been the leader of the EPC consortium for the project, which was delivered to Eni on time, at cost and according to specifications. It is one of only five FLNG facilities in the world, and Technip Energies has been involved in three of them. This project proves what we can do.
This industry is capex-intensive, and investments are for the long term. We have been in the market for more than 65 years already and we know that our designs need to be reliable today and in 30 years. In the Coral Sul project, I believe we have managed to deliver that, together with our partners and all the participants in the supply chain. If we are talking about building a second FLNG vessel, it is because this solution is working for Mozambique.

What were the key elements behind the project’s success, and can you discuss the results of the recent performance tests?
Coral Sul FLNG’s performance has been tested in line with specifications and everything is now working up to speed, 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The key to the project’s success was our long-standing partnerships. Technip Energies led the consortium, but JGC Corporation and Samsung Heavy Industries have been by our side for more than two decades, and our teams know how to work together. That kind of experience and collaborative spirit are what make projects like Coral Sul FLNG achievable.

Can you give us an overview of the technological capabilities that Technip Energies can provide to the LNG segment?
Our expertise lies in integrating technology into an overall project design and then handling the procurement, the construction and the commissioning. We stand out by doing it with continued success on multi-million-dollar projects. This is a key differentiator for us among other contractors in the market.

What are Technip Energies’sexpectations regarding the onshore liquefaction projects in Cabo Delgado?
The country needs onshore development with ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies, and we are fully prepared and committed to supporting them.

What are the company’s growth objectives for the years to come?
We are committed to supporting the domestic market as it develops. LNG represents a significant portion of our revenue, but we do not want to be solely perceived as an LNG company. We offer a diverse portfolio of project management and consulting services, as well as technologies and solutions in CCUS, low-carbon hydrogen and circularity, among others. We are prepared to assist in the development of gas and energy infrastructure to meet the growing energy demands of Mozambique and SADC [Southern African Development Community] countries.
Technip Energies in Mozambique is building capabilities toward human resources development and gender diversity around several foundations deeply anchored in our DNA. These include the employment of Mozambicans at all layers of the organisation, knowledge transfer from our international operating centres, local market development and sourcing, and the implementation of educational programmes.
