Porto Amboim Estaleiros Navais (Paenal) is a joint venture between Sonangol, SBM Offshore and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). The company was formed in 2007 to develop Angola’s maritime fabrication capacity and boost local content. It has produced FPSOs, vessels and offshore infrastructure for major energy players such as TotalEnergies, Eni, BP and TechnipFMC, making Paenal a flagship company in Angola.

Yard capabilities: The Paenal construction yard is one of the largest in Angola. It provides 2 million man hours of fabrication work annually at full capacity. It specialises in the fabrication of many types of assets for the development of offshore fields, including topsides and modules, wellhead platforms, subsea equipment and heavy steel structures.

Yard:

  • Equipped with a 2,500-tonne heavy-lift crane, the second-largest on the continent.
  • has a 270,000 square-metre service area,
  • 66,000 square metres for future storage and logistic assets.
  • Fabrication capacity is 10,000 tonnes per year.

Planned capabilities: Paenal aims to use the yard to become an integrated energy company. This will involve installing floating turbines, setting up a hydrogen plant to store the offshore-generated power and installing a desalination plant to process seawater and provide clean water to the hydrogen plant.

Looking at the future: While Paenal’s core business remains its support to oil and gas operators, the company is working to turn the base into a shipyard for maintenance and repairs and to ultimately build vessels. The company is committed to playing a lead role in the forthcoming decommissioning of offshore structures in Angola as part of the yard’s regeneration and diversification strategy.

Sustainable commitment: Paenal has taken significant steps to reduce its carbon footprint, including installing solar panels on its buildings’ roofs and reducing its dependence on thermal power. The company aims to halt the use of its diesel generators.
