Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding Company (MPHC) is the major player in Qatar’s petrochemical sector and is one of Qatar’s largest companies. Its holdings include Qatar Chemical Company (Q-Chem I), Qatar Chemical Company II (Q-Chem II) and Qatar Vinyl Company (QVC). These companies together create an integrated ecosystem of petrochemicals production.

Q-Chem I is a large petrochemicals operation that began production in 2004 and is located in Mesaieed Industrial City. Q-Chem II is another large petrochemicals project and began operating in 2010. QVC began operations in 2001 and is another petrochemicals project located at Mesaieed Industrial City. The holding company itself was created in 2013 by combining QatarEnergy’s interests in the three companies.

Across the Group’s three companies, MPHC produces a number of key products:

  • 1-Hexene: Used in fuels and the making of flavours, perfumes, dyes and plastic resins
  • Normal alpha olefins: Chemical intermediates used in the production of, for example, polymers, fatty acids, mercaptans, plasticiser alcohols, surfactants, wax applications and additives
  • Caustic soda: Used in paper making, water treatment, soaps, detergents and textiles
  • Ethylene dichloride: Used primarily to produce vinyl chloride monomer
  • Vinyl chloride monomer: Used to produce polyvinyl chloride
  • Medium- and high-density polyethylene: Used primarily to produce bottles, drums, toys, containers, pipes and films
  • Ethylene: Predominantly used by MPHC to produce polyolefins
  • Pyrolysis gasoline: Limited quantities produced, exported and sold locally
  • Hydrochloric acid: Used in oilfield chemicals and water treatment

MPHC seeks to increase its business portfolio to significantly increase its production capacity and product range, and it further aims to become globally recognised as a top petrochemicals producer.
