Amec Foster Wheeler lands contract from Sonatrach

Algeria

ALGIERS, August 12, 2015 – UK consultancy firm Amec Foster Wheeler announced on Wednesday that it had secured an engineering services contract from Algerian national oil and gas company Sonatrach.

The scope of the contract, the value of which has not yet been announced, will include design services and specialist consultation to aid in the debottlenecking of Algeria’s Hassi R’Mel gasfield, located about 550 kilometres south of Algiers. The company will perform a major flow assurance exercise to help avoid future bottlenecks, and will conduct compression studies and pipeline design.

The company stated in a press release that the services provided will allow the country “to remain a major exporter of gas.”

Discovered in 1956 with production beginning in 1961, Hassi R’Mel is one of the largest gasfields in the world. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the gasfield holds about 2.41 bcm (85 tcf) of proven gas reserves, representing more than half of the country’s total proven reserves.
