Argentina seeks gas contract renegotiation

BUENOS AIRES, February 20, 2018 – Argentina would like to amend its gas import contract with Bolivia to make it more cost-efficient and flexible, Argentina’s secretary of energy planning said on Monday.

According to Secretary Daniel Redondo, due to an expected ramp up of domestic gas production from Vaca Muerta, the energy ministry forecasts that by 2021, the country will able to meet internal gas demand throughout the year, except during winter months.

“We will need to import LNG during the winter unless we reach a deal with Bolivia where supply, instead of being flat throughout the year, peaks in the winter. It is something we want to do with Bolivia,” the government official said while speaking to a delegation of Japanese businesspeople and diplomats.

Bolivia currently exports gas to Argentina under a take-or-pay contract that expires in 2026.
