Arrests in Brazil in Petrobras probe

RIO DE JANEIRO, November 21, 2017 – Six people have been detained in the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Sergipe, Santa Catarina and Bahia in a bribery investigation into NOC Petrobras subsidiary Transpetro, international media reported on Tuesday.

A contractor allegedly paid a manager of Transpetro a total of BRL 7 million (USD 2.15 million) in bribes between 2009 and 2014, Reuters reported. Some of the money went to the left-wing Workers’ Party, the prosecutors claim.

The investigation came in the wake of a separate scandal involving Transpetro and prominent politicians, with six senators from the Brazilian Democracy Movement Party charged in September with receiving around BRL 864 million (USD 265 million) of alleged bribes.
