BHP starts drilling Trinidad exploration well

PORT OF SPAIN, June 26, 2018 – Australia’s BHP Billiton has commenced drilling the Victoria-1 exploration well in Trinidad and Tobago’s offshore TTDAA 5 block, international media reported Monday.

Transocean’s Deepwater Invictus drillship is being used for the operation.

Earlier in March, BHP Billiton announced plans to drill three wells offshore Trinidad and Tobago as oil and gas exploration in the country gradually picks up.

“In Trinidad, our plan is to do three wells back to back, one south, one north and then one south,” Niall McCormack, the super-major’s vice-president for global exploration, told journalists on the sidelines of the CERAWeek conference in Houston.

The company discovered the giant LeClerc field in the same block in August 2016 while exploring for oil. LeClerc is estimated to contain 113 bcm-142 bcm (4 tcf-5 tcf) of gas.
