BP in Kirkuk deal with Iraq

BASRA, May 8, 2018 – BP has signed a deal for the development of disputed oilfields near the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk with Iraqi NOC North Oil Company, international media reported on Tuesday.

BP is to triple production at six fields in the area to more than 1 million bopd, Reuters reported. The company has been in talks with the Iraqi government about the fields since October, shortly after Iraqi forces took the city from forces loyal to the Kurdistan Regional Government.

The dispute over Kirkuk has run since 2014 when Kurdish militia took the city as the Iraqi army fell apart after a lightning Islamic State advance. Violence there escalated more recently after Kurdish areas in Iraq held an independence referendum in September 2018.
