Azule Energy starts production at Angola’s Quiluma field

LUANDA, March 17, 2026 – Gas production has commenced in the offshore Quiluma field as part of the New Gas Consortium (NGC) project in Angola, Azule Energy and partners said on Tuesday.

The NGC project is Angola’s first non-associated gas development and is operated by Azule Energy, a 50-50 joint venture between BP and Eni. Azule Energy had previously announced that initial production from Quiluma had begun at 4.3 mcm (150 mcf) per day, with expectations to increase output up to 9.4 mcm (330 mcf) by the end of 2026.

Gas from the shallow-water Quiluma field will be processed at an onshore plant in Soyo and hence delivered to Angola LNG for export.

“This project marks an important step for Angola’s energy system and strengthens the country’s energy mix as it looks to enhance its position as a global player in the natural gas market,” said Gordon Birrell, BP executive vice-president for production and operations, and board member of Azule Energy.

“By ensuring a sustainable long-term gas supply for the Angola LNG plant, the project strengthens Angola’s ability to supply LNG to international markets in the long run, including Europe and Asia,” said Mike Sangster, senior vice-president for Africa exploration and production at TotalEnergies.

Quiluma is the third NGC asset to come on stream, following the Agogo field in July 2025 and the Ndungu developments in February 2026. Azule Energy holds a 37.4% interest in NGC, alongside partners Cabinda Gulf Oil Company with 31%, Sonangol with 19.8%, TotalEnergies with 11.8% and Angola’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) as the national concessionaire.

Since the beginning of 2025, Azule Energy has announced four discoveries, namely, Algaita-01 and Gajajeira-01 in Angola and Volans-1X and Capricornus-1X in Namibia’s Orange Basin.
