Brazil approves bill creating regulatory framework for offshore wind
BRASILIA , December 13, 2024 – The government of Brazil has approved an energy bill creating a regulatory framework for wind power and amending rules for procuring other forms of energy, Reuters reported on Friday.
The legislation, titled bill 576/21, establishes rules allowing the federal government to auction offshore areas for wind farms.
This represents a critical move for enabling investors to develop offshore wind projects in the country.
Brazil is home to major wind power potential, with more than 100 proposed projects still in early stages that would develop 244 GW in capacity.
The bill also established amended rules under which the government can contract energy supplied from coal and gas-fired thermal plants.
In addition, the report said, it mandates that the government contract supplies from small hydroelectric plants, liquid hydrogen produced from ethanol in northeastern Brazil and wind energy parks in the south.
