Chevron hands over Canada west coast permits

Chevron has voluntarily relinquished the last oil and gas development licences off Canada’s Pacific Coast, a move that will support plans for conservation, the country’s natural resources minister announced on Wednesday.

Chevron relinquished the final 23 permits this month, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said. A total of 227 permits had been granted prior to a 1972 moratorium on oil and gas exploration off the country’s West Coast.

The Canadian government is working to provide environmental protection for the ecologically rich waters off its west coast.

Calgary-headquartered Chevron Canada announced its decision to voluntarily relinquish the assets on February 9, emphasising its commitment to the responsible development of energy resources. Its current activity includes projects in the oil sands and in Alberta shale acreage, as well as E&P developments off the coast of the eastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
