Eni begins development of Congo LNG project

Eni has laid the foundation stone for the Republic of Congo’s first LNG project, the Italian energy giant announced on Tuesday.

Gas for the development will be sourced from the offshore Marine XII concession and produced via the installation of two FLNGs at the producing Nenè and Litchendjili fields.

When complete, the project will have a production capacity of 3 million tonnes per year.

The first FLNG is currently under conversion and will have a capacity of 600,000 tonnes per year. It is expected to begin production in 2023.

The second unit is already under construction and will have a capacity of 2.4 million tonnes per year. It is expected to begin production in 2025.

“Today we celebrate the launch of one of Eni’s main projects, made possible by the collaboration with the Republic of the Congo and destined to significantly contribute to both Italy and Europe’s energy security and industrial competitiveness,” said Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni.

In January 2023, Eni signed a contract with Expro Group Holdings to provide the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the associated pre-treatment facility.

Earlier in January 2023, Wison (Nantong) Heavy Industry began construction of the second 2.4-million-tonne FLNG in China.
