Eni, Petronas to build 650,000-bpd biorefinery in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29, 2024 – Eni subsidiary Enilive will partner with Petronas and Japanese biotechnology player Euglena to build a 650,000-bpd biorefinery in Malaysia, Eni said on Friday.
The facility will be located at Petronas’s Pengerang Integrated Complex in Johor and its output will include sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and bio-naphtha.
It is expected to be operational by the end of 2028.
The partners will form a joint venture to build the refinery, with Enilive and Petronas holding the largest shares, Eni said. The investment in the project was not disclosed.
The facility will have flexibility both in terms of feedstock processability – with state-of-the-art Ecofining, a technology developed by Eni and Honeywell UOP, and a pre-treating unit – and in terms of products, with a configuration capable of maximising the production of SAF for aircraft as well as HVO.
Enilive, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eni, aims to provide progressively decarbonised services and products for the energy transition, contributing to Eni’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Enilive CEO Stefano Ballista called the FID “a milestone to reach our 2030 targets of biorefining capacity of more than 5 million tonnes per year and SAF optionality up to 2 million tonnes per year.”
