Eni starts production from gasfield offshore Sicily
Italy SAN DONATO MILANESE, August 20, 2024 – Eni has started production from the Argo Cassiopea gasfield in the Strait of Sicily, the Italian major announced on Monday.
Initial test production has begun from one of four subsea wells drilled and has been transported through a 60-kilometre subsea pipeline to the Gela processing plant in southern Sicily. From there, it will be fed into the Italian national grid.
The remaining wells and associated facilities are expected to be brought online, tested and commissioned over the coming months. Production will be carried out entirely under the sea and have no visual impact, and a dedicated 3.6-MW PV installation will make the project carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Argo Cassiopea’s reserves are estimated at approximately 10 bcm (353 bcf) and peak gas production is expected to reach 1.5 bcm (53 bcf) per year. The asset is operated by Eni, which holds a 60% interest, together with Energean, which is in the process of selling its 40% stake to Carlyle International Energy Partners.
