Eni to launch Italy’s first CCS project

MILAN, December 20, 2022 – Eni and local gas infrastructure company Snam have signed an agreement to build Italy’s first CCS project, the Italian energy giant announced on Monday.
The two companies will develop and manage the first phase of the Ravenna Carbon Capture and Storage project through a 50:50 joint venture.
The project will be located at Eni’s natural gas treatment plant in Casal Borsetti, Ravenna.
The first phase will see the capture of 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide transported via pipeline to the Porto Corsini Mare Ovest platform. The gas will be injected into the depleted Porto Corsini Mare Ovest gasfield offshore Ravenna.
The agreement includes the implementation of studies and preparatory activities for later development phases.
Around 500 jobs are meant to be created during the development of the first phase.
“This joint venture sets the first initiative in Italy with the ambition to offer a solution to the entire hard-to-abate production cluster in the Po Valley, and potentially also to other Italian regions as well as other countries bordering the Mediterranean basin,” said Stefano Venier, CEO of Snam.
