ExxonMobil outlines expansive gas plans in Guyana
GEORGETOWN, February 19, 2025 – ExxonMobil plans a large-scale natural gas project in Guyana aimed at enhancing domestic supply and laying the groundwork for exports, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
The project comes in response to the government’s call for increased gas availability to power industrial expansion.
The “Wales Gas Vision,” unveiled by ExxonMobil Guyana president Alistair Routledge, will deliver gas for the production of fertilisers through a USD 1-billion pipeline completed in 2024. A portion of the gas will also be allocated to the government’s Gas-to-Energy project for power generation and NGL production.
As part of the initiative, ExxonMobil will construct new pipelines, a gas processing facility and an offshore LNG plant. These developments will support LNG exports while also supplying Guyana’s Berbice region with gas to support fertiliser and alumina production.
The total investment in the project was not specified.
ExxonMobil’s Guyana consortium – which also includes US-based Hess Corporation and China’s CNOOC – plans to significantly increase gas production, particularly from non-associated gas projects such as Longtail. An FID on Longtail, which is poised to be the group’s eighth development in Guyana and could yield up to 34 mcm (1.2 bcf) per day of gas, is expected this year.
“We are ready to deliver gas to shore,” Routledge said at the Guyana Energy Conference, while emphasising ExxonMobil’s commitment to advancing the country’s energy transition.
The Guyana Energy Conference runs from Tuesday-Friday this week.
The move aligns with the government’s vision to integrate natural gas into an energy matrix historically dominated by oil. President Vickram Bharrat reiterated the administration’s dedication to harnessing gas resources for power generation and new revenue streams via LNG and petrochemicals exports.
“There will be a shift towards gas utilisation and monetisation,” Reuters quoted Bharrat as saying during the conference, adding that the government plans to unveil its national gas strategy later this year.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s offshore oil operations continue to expand. ExxonMobil announced that the country’s fourth FPSO vessel – built by SBM Offshore – departed Singapore this week and is set to commence operations in Q3 of this year.
