Fire rips through oil platform in Azerbaijan

BAKU, December 7, 2015 – As much as 29 workers are feared dead after a fire caused by storm damage to a gas pipe tore through an offshore oil platform operated by Azerbaijan’s state-owned SOCAR.

Of the 62 workers on board, 33 have been rescued, one is reported killed and the remaining 28 are unaccounted for, as of Sunday. The ongoing storm complicated rescue efforts.

About 60 percent of SOCAR’s oil production from the Guneshli field passes through the Soviet-era platform. The accident will cause a temporary drop in the state company’s daily output from the platform of around 6,700 barrels of oil and 1.08 mcm (38.1 mcf) of gas.

Three workers swept to sea by the same storm from another offshore platform in the Caspian Sea are also still missing.
