Iraq requests halt of Kurdish oil exports

BAGHDAD, September 25, 2017 – The government of Iraq has requested that foreign importers of oil from the Kurdistan Region cease their imports.

The move came on Sunday on the eve of a referendum on independence for Kurdistan, which is home to numerous oil and gas assets and has recently stepped up co-operation with investors to revive its energy development.

Baghdad’s request is widely seen to be aimed at Turkey, Kurdistan’s main partner in its oil exports, which are transferred via pipeline across Turkish territory and on to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.

In the statement released on Sunday, the Iraqi government asked that “neighbouring countries and the countries of the world […] deal exclusively with the federal government of Iraq in regards to entry posts and oil.”
