JERA signs 27-year LNG deal with QatarEnergy

DOHA, February 4, 2026 – Japan’s JERA has signed a 27-year sales and purchase agreement with QatarEnergy under which the Qatari company will supply 3 million tonnes per year of LNG starting in 2028, JERA announced on Saturday.

LNG volumes will be sourced from Qatar Energy’s production facilities and delivered on an ex-ship basis.

The deal was signed on the sidelines of the LNG 2026 conference in Doha and builds on a 30-year partnership between the companies. It supports Japan’s Seventh Strategic Energy Plan, which maintains natural gas as a key resource for energy stability even after carbon neutrality is achieved. Japan anticipates heightened power demand from the proliferation of data centres and growth in semiconductor manufacturing.

“This agreement solidifies a vital pillar of JERA’s strategy to strengthen our global portfolio and support the surging energy demand of tomorrow. It ensures we remain fully aligned with Japan’s national policy and the energy transition goals, securing a stable and resilient energy future for the nation,” said Yukio Kani.

JERA is Japan’s largest power producer and is seeking to diversify its LNG supply through long-term contracts with producers in the Middle East, Asia and the USA. QatarEnergy is one of the world’s largest LNG producers, with significant operations in Qatar’s North Field and global joint ventures.
