Kuwait eyes 50% renewables by 2050

KUWAIT CITY, May 12, 2025 – Kuwait’s Minister of Electricity & Water & Renewable Energy (MEWRE), Sabeeh Al Mukhaizeem, has stated that Kuwait will prioritise reaching 50% of electricity generation from renewables by 2050, the Kuwait News Agency reported on Sunday.

Speaking at the Kuwait Sustainable Energy Week 2025, which kicked off on Sunday and will run until May 13, the minister said Kuwait is progressing on its renewable energy projects and is seeking regional and international partnerships to further the development of clean energy in the country.

The event seeks to connect policymakers with private sector companies and international capital to set a course for Kuwait’s energy transition goals and accelerate the implementation of renewables projects.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, the minister indicated that the Shagaya Renewable Energy Project is slated for implementation this year, local media reported. The project will be developed in phases, partly through PPPs and partly in co-operation with the Chinese government, with whom Kuwait signed an agreement in March to develop renewables projects for approximately 3.2 GW.

The MEWRE is making efforts towards modernising the policy framework for PPPs to support the development of large-scale energy projects like Shagaya, and seeking to increase private sector participation in smaller, distributed energy projects such as solar rooftop installations.

Kuwait is also assuming the presidency of the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), an intergovernmental organisation that seeks to increase renewable energy and energy efficiency practices in the region.
