Many feared dead in Azeri rig accident

BAKU, December 15, 2016 – At least one rig worker died on Thursday in an accident on an offshore rig in the Caspian Sea. Rescue efforts are ongoing to try and retrieve as many as 10 other workers.

Strong winds ripped off a section of a walkway on the platform, the first reports indicated. At least five workers were on the 150-metre section amidst 145 km/h winds at the time of the accident, SOCAR confirmed. It remains unclear which platform is affected.

While the Ministry of Emergency Situations immediately dispatched two search and rescue vessels to the area, local media suggested that all 10 missing workers are feared dead.
