Netherlands plans world’s largest offshore hydrogen asset

Netherlands
The Dutch government has detailed plans to construct a 500-MW green hydrogen facility in the North Sea, Reuters reported on Monday.

The hydrogen asset will be located in the northern province of Groningen off the coast of the Wadden Islands and will connect to a planned offshore wind farm at Ten noorden van de Waddeneilanden.

Hydrogen will be transported onshore via an existing gas pipeline.

The facility is expected to come on line in 2031.

Tenders for construction of the Ten noorden van de Waddeneilanden hydrogen project will be held between Q2 2025 and the end of 2027.

The development represents the Netherland’s first large-scale offshore hydrogen venture and the largest of its kind in the world.

“We have already designated the area as a preferred location so that preparations can start quickly and we provide the sector with clarity so that they can make their investment plans,” said Dutch Minister for Climate and Energy Policy Rob Jetten.

The Dutch government has set a goal to install 4 GW of onshore renewables facilities to produce hydrogen by 2030.
