New NNPC head appointed

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu has been removed as Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) group managing director by President Muhammadu Buhari, a statement released by his office late on Monday revealed.

According to Femi Adesina, spokesperson for the presidency, Kachikwu will continue as chairman of the new NNPC board. Maikanti Kacalla Baru will take over as NNPC group managing director. “President Buhari urges the new board to ensure the successful delivery of the mandate of NNPC and serve the nation by upholding the public trust placed on them in managing this critical national asset,” Adesina said.

Appointed in 2015, Kachikwu’s tenure has recently been overshadowed by an uptick in violence in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions. While production has recovered to some 1.8 million bopd – up from as low as 1.3 million bopd – it still lags behind the 2.2 million bopd recorded earlier this year.
