Niger Delta group threatens Eni

LAGOS, June 19, 2018 – Niger Delta Activists Forum (NDAF) has threatened to begin attacks on Eni’s Nigerian arm on Wednesday, local media have reported.

The NDAF said it would begin “Operation Zero Barrels” against the company as retaliation for “disregard and total disrespect” for local residents. Earlier in the month, the group had issued a 14-day ultimatum for the company to start recruiting local staff.

“We want to further draw the attention of all relevant government agencies to the fact that the resolve by these communities is real and any effort to remedy things is still highly welcomed,” NDAF spokesman Success Jack was quoted as saying by Vanguard on Monday.

Previous rounds of violence in the Niger Delta have decimated the country’s oil production in recent years. The government has introduced a series of measures to mitigate the conflict, including modular refineries, an increased budgetary allotment for the Niger Delta Ministry and the Niger Delta Development Commission, and the startup of the Maritime University.
