Nigeria, Morocco sign pipeline MoU

Nigeria and Morocco signed a joint declaration on Sunday outlining a plan for building a gas pipeline between the countries, local media reported.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines agreed on a 5,660-kilometre on and offshore route as well as the capex for the project, Moroccan Press Agency reported. The sides will begin discussing financing with international banks and preparation of the preliminary documents.

“The Nigerian and Moroccan parties have worked effectively and constructively to ensure that the feasibility study for the pipeline, which is the first phase of this strategic project, is carried out by the contractor in a professional manner and in accordance with best practices,” the parties said in a joint statement.

The pipeline will supply West African states as well as Morocco with Nigerian gas, with potential to be extended to Europe. The signing was held at an event chaired by King Mohammed VI and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
