Nigeria, Niger to build refinery: report

ABUJA, February 2, 2018 – Nigeria and Niger have signed an agreement to jointly build a refinery, Nigerian Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu announced on Thursday.

 

“This [agreement] will be expressed through the construction of a refinery in the border town between the Republic of Niger and Katsina state, Nigeria and a crude oil pipeline from the Republic of Niger to the new refinery,” Kachikwu said on Twitter. “Bilateral and technical agreements will be signed in coming days.”

The news came amid widespread fuel shortages in recent weeks and as Nigeria’s Kaduna refinery was forced to shut down due to a shortage of crude, Reuters reported. NOC Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was seeking to arrange new supplies, company representatives told the agency.
