Nigerian $1.7-bln graft case delayed

ABUJA, October 2, 2017 – A lawsuit to recover USD 1.7 billion from two Nigerian companies accused of profiting from corruption was delayed until November because the court did not sit on Friday.
The two companies, Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria and Atlantic Energy Brass Development, are linked to former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke. Co-defendants Olajide Omokore and Kolawole Aluko, the chairman and director of both companies, respectively, have filed a countersuit to set aside a temporary forfeiture order and stay further proceedings during their appeal.
Former Minister Alison-Madueke, who held office from 2011 to 2015, was charged with money-laundering in absentia in April 2017, while USD 110 million was seized from her bank accounts in February 2017. In August 2017, an additional USD 40 million in assets belonging to the former minister and four housing complexes linked to her were seized. Her current location is unknown. She also faces investigations in the UK and USA.
