Norway’s Equinor shifts priority to gas over oil

Norway

OSLO, October 28, 2021 – Equinor has decided to stop injecting natural gas to enhance oil production on a North Sea field to prioritise natural gas exports to Europe, the Norwegian state-run company announced at a conference in Oslo on Wednesday.

The company has temporarily halted gas injection on its Gina Krogh field.

“Equinor has an important role as a reliable energy provider to Europe, and we have taken steps to increase our gas exports to respond to the high demand,” said Anders Opel, president and CEO of Equinor.

The move is a step away from the traditional oil-centric strategy in Norway put down by the government in which all associated gas is re-injected to improve oil recovery.
