Oman starts up Rima water treatment plant
MUSCAT, February 6, 2023 – PDO has officially inaugurated the USD 225-million Rima water treatment plant, the Omani NOC announced on Wednesday.
The 25-square-kilometre facility uses a gravitational oil and water separation and natural biological treatment process, the first of its kind in Oman.
The new facility can now process up to 65,000 cubic metres of water per day.
The development lowers the company’s greenhouse gas emissions by around 53,000 tonnes per year, lowers energy consumption by 10 MW and creates a desert oasis for local wildlife.
Previously 60% of the associated water produced at Rima was used for water flooding to up recovery, with the remaining 40% injected into a deep reservoir.
The new facility was completed four months ahead of schedule.
All construction work was done by local companies.
The project follows PDO’s Nimr Water Treatment Project in southern Oman, which was considered the world’s largest industrial constructed wetlands project.
